I want to save some money, can I design my own artwork?

Of course, our professional design fees are some of the best around (take a look at our NCR Design Service for further information), however, if you wish to design your own artwork and provide a print ready file then this is fine. Ideally you will need a professional design program such as Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign or Corel Draw, however, some other programs such as Microsoft Word/Publisher/Excel will still be able to produce files that we can print from.

Please note that a common mistake customers make is to scan an existing design they have had printed previously and supplying this as a PDF file or similar for print. We cannot print from scanned images and the source file that was used to print the original product is the file that we require. If you do not have the source file and have an existing design that has been printed previously, then we can re-draw your artwork for you and the fee for this is our set design fee shown on our website. If you require any help or have any further questions then do not hesitate to get in touch.

What are your required design specifications?

Below are the basic requirements that we need from your artwork dependant on the software you are using.

Adobe Photoshop (or similar)

  • If you are supplying artwork as a press ready PDF (preferred), PSD, TIFF or JPEG please ensure that your artwork is the correct size as the product you are ordering, a minimum of 300dpi and that all layers are flattened prior to exporting your print ready file, ensure you keep a copy of the original file as once flattened you will not be able to easily edit your artwork. If ordering NCR Books please ensure that you leave a 2cm margin on the edge to be bound. For best results do not use any file size optimisation when saving your file.

Adobe Illustrator/InDesign (or similar)

  • If you are supplying artwork as a press ready PDF (preferred), AI or EPS file then please ensure that your artwork is the correct size as the product you are ordering, all fonts are converted to paths/outlines, all images are embedded correctly and any transparencies have been flattened. To preview how your artwork will look when printed, we would recommend viewing an Overprint Preview. This should identify any vector objects that have overprint applied to the them, the object will appear transparent and as a result will not be printed. In Acrobat Reader you can select Overprint Preview which can be located in the advanced drop down menu, in both Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign you can view an Overprint Preview by going to the view drop down menu and selecting Overprint Preview. If ordering NCR Books please ensure that you leave a 2cm margin on the edge to be bound.

Microsoft Word/Publisher/Excel (or similar)

  • If you are supplying artwork as a Word, Publisher or Excel file then please ensure that your artwork is the correct size as the product you are ordering. If ordering NCR Books please ensure that you leave a 2cm margin on the edge to be bound. We can print from most Word, Publisher and Excel files although we sometimes have to spend a small amount of time adjusting the file to make it ready for print. In most instances where this does not take too long we do not charge, however, if any adjustments are going to take longer than expected we will contact you prior to carrying out any work; the fee charged in this instance is typically 50% of the set design fee shown on our website.

All artwork supplied is treated as print ready, although we will of course always do our best to point out any obvious problems, however the onus is on the customer to ensure the above specifications are met where applicable.

Which file types do you accept?

Our preferred file type is a press ready PDF, if you have the knowledge and software to save in this format then please do so. Alternatively, as long as the artwork meets our required design specifications set out above we can accept many other files, including PSD, TIFF, JPEG, AI, EPS, Word, Publisher and Excel files.

Is there anything else I need to know?

Please ensure that all file types are PC based.

As mentioned above, if you have the knowledge and software to save your artwork as a press ready PDF file then please do so.

I have no artwork, how much does design cost?
